As I’m sure you are aware, June is national safety month! OK, maybe you had no idea, but you should know that safety is hugely important in the workplace. According to the National Safety Council, a workplace injury occurs every 7 seconds. That is roughly 4,600,000 Injuries a year. Now there is no denying that sometimes workers can be careless when performing their job duties, but employers must do all they can to prevent workplace injuries.
This may lead you to be scratching your head asking yourself, “is my business compliant with safety regulations?” You may have heard of something called OSHA, but what is it? OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is a part of the United States Department of Labor and was enacted in the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. With all long, legal words aside, it is basically the act of assuring safe and healthful working conditions by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach and education.
OSHA has helped reduce the number of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths over the years, and is intended to do the same for future years. Creating a safe workplace environment is a basic human right and should be taken with the utmost importance. Some of the most frequently cited OSHA workplace safety violations include:
- Fall Protection
- Hazard Communication
- Scaffolding
- Respiratory Protection
One very simple way of informing employees about safety is postings in the workplace. Our go to source for workplace safety is Poster Elite. They offer labor law posters that supplement and reinforce training objectives. They also notify workers of rights and who to contact for assistance.
